Pretoria North police kicked off an awareness campaign at malls in their area over the weekend.
Police spokesperson Captain Rebecca Phatlane said the crimes most often reported were theft out of and of vehicles.
“This is especially a problem at shopping malls,” said Phatlane.
“That is why management at Pretoria North SAPS launched awareness campaigns at the malls to make sure shoppers and motorists stay alert.”
Vehicle thefts and remote jamming remained prevalent in the north of Pretoria, police warned.
“Remote jamming still happens,” said Phatlane.

“A simple way to prevent this is to check that the doors are locked, by pulling the handles, before moving away from the vehicle.”
Phatlane said valuable items, such as handbags and cellphones, should never be left in where they can be seen from the outside.
“We still find that people leave their valuables in the car when they go do their shopping.”
Police distributed pamphlets warning the public against drugs, domestic violence and child abuse.
Police said domestic violence was also a concern in the community.
Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk of Sinoville police had previously explained that domestic violence had the lowest successful conviction rate.
“Almost 90 percent of the time, cases of domestic violence are withdrawn,” Van Dyk explained.
Police urged residents to report all crimes to their nearest police station and reminded people that they could also make an anonymous report on 08600-10111.
