The Lyttelton sector 1 CPF has raised concerns over smash-and-grabs, which have become a common occurrence in the area.
These incidents tend to happen in the early morning and late afternoon as criminals target motorists in peak-hour traffic.
The corner of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive and Migmatite Street is a particular hotspot, said sector 1 CPF chairman Hugo Erasmus.

“We have reported over 40 incidents at this intersection in the last month,” said Erasmus.
“The month before there was another 40, although many of them were unsuccessful.
“The smash-and-grabs tend to occur when motorists are making their way from the N14 towards the Centurion Mall.”
Erasmus said the criminals parked on the N14.
“They then come down on Hendrik Verwoerd Drive towards the intersection with Migmatite. After they grab the valuables from the vehicle, they then make their way back to the N14 to escape the scene.”

To mitigate this, a fence was put up at the hotspot and, according to Erasmus, the incidents stopped for a while.
“Unfortunately, the fencing itself was stolen and the smash-and-grabs continue.”
He said other hotspots included the intersections of Jean Avenue and the N14, Botha Avenue and the N1 off-ramp, John Vorster Drive and End Street, and the N1 and the Samrand Road off-ramp.
