UPDATE: Eldoraigne barrier ‘not enough’ to keep motorists in line

The hope was that the R45 000 barrier would deter motorists from making use of the road reserve as a “shortcut”.

Questions have been raised about whether a steel barrier installed on the side of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive in Eldoraigne is enough to keep motorists from skipping the queues in peak traffic.

A local believes motorists are still “taking chances” by using a stretch of gravel road next to Hendrik Verwoerd Drive to circumvent peak-hour traffic.

The hope was that the R45 000 barrier would deter motorists from making use of the road reserve as a “shortcut”.

However, Chris Botha who previously made use of the route, feels offenders still have ample opportunity to do this despite the intervention.

“It is of very little help if you consider motorists are getting onto the sidewalk at the intersection of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive and Theunis van Niekerk Street,” said Botha.

“They then drive to the barrier which is only two-thirds of the way to the intersection with Willem Botha Drive. Then they get back onto Hendrik Verwoerd Drive. Previous articles claim the barrier is close to the place where people get onto the ‘shortcut’. This is not true.”

At the time of the barrier’s installation, local ward councillor Cindy Billson said much still needed to be done in the area.

Concrete bollards on the opposite side of the road prevent similar manoeuvres and more of these will be placed in the area to prevent motorists from getting any more “ideas”.
