Streetlights out of order for almost 3 months in the north

“Not only does it present a danger to us all, but it poses a potential danger to pedestrians who go unnoticed when crossing the street.”

Residents in the north of Pretoria are angry at the City for failing to repair damaged streetlights that have been out of order for nearly three months.

Resident Michelle la Grange has tried to get help in her area where she and her family fear for their safety in a street where no light is present each night.

“The worrying thing is that we leave for work at 05:00 each morning, and our street is completely dark,” La Grange told Rekord.

“We fear that it may become a prime spot for crime, as nothing is visible outside our gate.”

La Grange has reported the issue to the metro, with no success and has also brought up the matter with ward councillor Yolanda Duvenhage.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have much control over it, as the City works according to a schedule and as far as I’m concerned they are in the process of getting to the affected streets in the north,” Duvenhage told Rekord.

“You have to understand, the streetlights are of poor quality, when they get fixed, they can easily get damaged again after severe winds of thunderstorms.”

La Grange has expressed her concern towards the extent of time that streetlights are not working and worries that it might become a popular spot for criminals, as they know the lights are out of order for months at a time.

“We are begging the city to fix the lights,” La Grange said.

“Not only does it present a danger to us all, but it poses a potential danger to pedestrians who go unnoticed when crossing the street.”

Faulty streetlights can be reported to either calling 012-358-9999 or by sending an email to streetlights@tshwane.gov.za

To report faulty streetlights, provide the following: the physical street address, adjacent streets, pole number or the house number and details of the problem.

The Tshwane metro was yet to respond to an inquiry about the complaints at the time of going to print.
