Tshwane mayor Stephen Mokgalapa has declared war on potholes in Soshanguve, saying repairing of failing road services would be a priority.
“Today (Tuesday), a number of city officials and I took to the streets of Soshanguve as part of the mayoral intervention to address the citywide pothole repair backlog,” Mokgalapa said.
He said his visit to Soshanguve was part of the city’s #AcceleratedServiceDelivery Programme to region 1.
“We were, among other things, repairing potholes, painting road markings and conducting an oversight at the construction site of the Soshanguve DD reservoir. We are declaring war on potholes and prioritising the repair of failing road surfaces.”

Mokgalapa said it was “very important” to lend a hand and assist contractors in order to address the pothole repair backlogs.
He was accompanied by city officials who arrived in Soshanguve dressed in overalls and joined the contractors who already had material and equipment for pothole repairs and other types of road maintenance.
He said pothole repair teams were working overtime to tackle the backlog, including on weekends.
“The city is committed to improving mobility within the metro, through the provision of safe roads and infrastructure network. The city has given the issue of potholes a priority in ensuring that we become a pothole-free city.”
Mokgalapa said the city has prioritised potholes as they impacted negatively on business.
“In some instances, potholes cause accidents as cars always [swerve] trying to avoid them.”
