Human Rights Day is celebrated in South Africa every year on 21 March. It commemorates the events that took place in Sharpeville on this day in 1960.
On this historic day, 69 people lost their lives and another 180 were injured when police fired on a crowd that had gathered to protest against the pass laws enacted during apartheid.
This day serves as an affirmation of common people rising together to proclaim their human rights.

According to the government definition of human rights, it is defined as a right that every human has, simply because they are human.
In 1948, the United Nations established universal human rights on the basis of humanity, freedom, justice and peace.
