UPDATE: Load-shedding could affect water supply – Tshwane metro

Tshwane's water supply may be affected due to rolling black-outs despite Rand Water’s ability to supply due to certain metro reservoirs not having generators to pump water.

Tshwane’s water supply could be affected in some instances if load-shedding persists, the metro has said.

“These are in cases where water must be pumped to other reservoirs,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

“Not all city reservoirs have generators which could lead to the water supply being affected.”

“Also, in instances where Rand Water is unable to pump water to all cities, all municipalities will be affected.”

Rand Water has, however, claimed their capacity and network to supply water is “stable”.

“Currently our bulk water network that supplies all our customers remains stable and we are managing demand as normal,” said Rand Water spokesperson Justice Mohale.

“We are closely monitoring the possible impact that may occur because of load-shedding.”

“Certain municipalities within our area of supply have also experienced electricity infrastructure failures; these have posed no risk to our network.”

“Should load-shedding levels be elevated or prolonged, Rand Water will timeously communicate the impact thereof.”

He reiterated the call by some municipalities for consumers to reduce their water consumption.

Mohale said the warning was especially for areas such as Bethal, the north region of Pretoria and the east of Ekurhuleni being affected first as they are situated at “the end of the supply chain”.
