UPDATE: Onderstepoort landfill site closing date set
The public is advised to utilise the Ga-Rankuwa, Soshanguve and Heatherley landfill sites as well as nearby private landfill sites, which among others include, Bon Accord, Rosslyn and Mooiplaats as an alternative.
The Onderstepoort landfill site situated on the R566 road will be closed from 31 March.
“The Tshwane municipality has taken a decision to close down the facility which was legitimated in February 1992, after it was certified that it has reached its lifespan,” metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said.
He said post this anticipated closure, only garden refuse would be accepted until 31 December 2019 or until further notice.
“The garden refuse will be needed to rehabilitate the landfill site.”

Mashigo said landfills were usually designed with a specific life span, determined by the volume of waste that can be handled.
“Once filled to capacity, they must be closed and decommissioned as stipulated in the waste management legislation.”
