Metro vows to clear ‘ill-maintained’ Villieria substation

Residents said that aside from the overgrown grass, they also feared for their safety at times.

The Tshwane metro has vowed to clean up a dirty substation in the Moot before the end of the week.

This comes after residents in the area complained that the Jakaranda substation in Villieria was not being maintained.

Residents said that aside from the overgrown grass, they also feared for their safety at times.

One such a resident, Jo Scheffer said the substation in 20th Avenue was in a terrible state.

“Not only is it an eyesore, but we also fear for our safety at times,” she said.

The substation borders the flat Scheffer lives in.

She said the substation, which was still in working order, was not properly secured.

“How long will it be before vagrants start coming into the area for shelter?” she asked.

“Once that happens, the area will become a crime hotspot.”

Scheffer said building rubble was also being dumped at the substation.

“It is not a pretty sight when walking out of your house,” she said.

She said the grass just kept growing and growing, because “no one is cutting it”.

“One of these days, we will have a pest problem on our hands and I’m sure they will do great damage at the substation.”

She said this was “not the only substation in the area” that was in such a state.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said municipal teams would clean up the area before the end of the week.
