UPDATE: Alternative sites to be used after closure of north landfill

The Onderstepoort landfill site will, however, continue to receive garden refuse until December or further notice.

Users of the Onderstepoort landfill are now advised to use alternative sites in and around the north of Pretoria following its closure at the weekend.

This follows after the Tshwane metro advised users of the site’s closure in February.

“The Tshwane municipality has taken a decision to close down the facility which was legitimated in February 1992, after it was certified that it has reached its lifespan,” spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said.

Although the site closed its doors to domestic waste, garden waste will continue to be accepted until 31 December or “until further notice”.

Mashigo said the garden refuse would be needed to rehabilitate the site.

“Once filled to capacity they must be closed and decommissioned as stipulated in the waste that can be handled.”

He explained landfills were designed with a specific lifespan which was determined by the volume of waste which could be handled.

Users of the landfill site were advised to use the Ga-Rankuwa, Soshanguve and Heatherly landfill sites along with other private landfill sites in the area including Bon Accord, Rosslyn and Mooiplaats.
