Empty building near Moot stream has residents in despair

“We have lost all hope and don't know what to do anymore.”

Residents in the Moot are in despair after a disused ablution facility near a stream has been taken over by drifters.

“We don’t know what to do anymore,” said the CPF chairperson of Pretoria Moot, Elsabe van Staden.

The stream is situated on the corner of Louis Trichardt Street and 23rd Avenue.

“The community has asked the municipality several times to strip the building, but we have received no help from them,” said Van Staden.

“As the week progresses, the number of drifters who live there changes, but over the weekend there are 10 at most,” she said.

“We are convinced that the people who live there are involved in crime in our area.”

Van Staden said the residents suspected that prostitution was also taking place at the site.

Local ward councillor Elmarie Linde said the fact that drifters have been living in the building was only recently brought to her attention.

“From time to time in the past this little house has caused problems and I think the time has come to bulldoze the little house, seeing as it serves no purpose,” she said.

Linde said the building had no use and that the city council’s park department was no longer using it.

She said as soon as funds became available, the building would be stripped to get rid of the “undesirables”.

“I will send my suggestion to the metro and ask them to bulldoze it,” she said.
