North residents celebrate their mothers

“Women are like rocks. We are stronger than anyone. We can handle any situation with care.”

Residents in Soshanguve will join others worldwise to celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday, 12 May.

Observed annually, on the second Sunday of May by more than 40 countries worldwide, the day is meant for families to celebrate its own mother and their influence and value in the community.

Rekord took to the streets of Soshanguve to find out what Mother’s Day meant to them.

Bonolo Tshabalala (16), a grade 10 learner at Reitumetse High School in Soshanguve Block L, said on Sunday she would celebrate her mother because of two roles she played in her life.

“We are five at home. I live with my mom, aunt, and her children. My mother takes care of all of us,” said Tshabalala.

“The way she has raised me after the death of my father made me see that she is indeed my superwoman.

“I have not planned anything for her this Mother’s Day but surely I will think of something,” said Tshabalala.

Block IA resident and a mother herself, Thembi Hlatshwayo (30) believes that women are more like rocks than mountains.

Hlatshwayo said it was important for women to be celebrated because they were delicate and strong compared to their male counterparts.

“Women are like rocks. We are stronger than anyone. We can handle any situation with care,” said Hlatshwayo.

“Unlike some men, we are more responsible. Their love is not like a mother’s love. If there is a mother at home, everything is in order. You do not have to question anything, you are able to see for yourself.”

A 15-year-old learner, Ofentse Msiza from Reitumetse High School, said mothers must be celebrated because they often placed the needs of others first before theirs.

“It is a special day for our mothers and they do deserve to be treated special,” said Msiza.

“My mother is a single parent and my needs, wants are known by her, from toiletries to clothing. She takes care of me, my little brother and grandmother. This shows that my mother is indeed a special woman.”

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) accounting student Thabisile Nkosi said mothers ought to be celebrated for the value they added.

She said it was because of her mother that she never went to bed on an empty stomach.

“My mother provides a lot for my family. That is why I wish to buy her a house and a car just so I can show her my appreciation. Most of all, I want to make her proud by completing my studies,” said Nkosi.

Second-year administration student at TUT Nothando Zondi (22) originally from KZN, in Mnambithi, said: “I was raised by my grandmother as my mother spent most of her time at work trying to provide for us.

“Even though my grandmother was strict, she made me the woman I am today. Her presence in my mother’s absence made me forget that my mother was not around. This Mother’s Day I wish to buy her a pair of shoes that she has always longed for.”
