Scheppel electrifies crowd with energetic performance

With his electronic violin in hand, Pretoria’s own Scheppel was ready to entertain his audience. He performed an array of songs from film soundtracks, adapted to his own dynamic style, on July 31 at the Fairtree Atterbury Theatre in Scheppel: A Symphonic Rock Showcase – Cinema Music From the Movies.

A rock violinist who adapts film soundtracks is a special treat for any music lover, movie buff or someone simply looking for an entertaining night out. While the possibility of tedium kicking in existed, the music was more than engaging as classic film soundtracks were electrified back to life by Scheppel’s infectious passion.

Playing numerous cinematic covers with no pause for intermission is impressive, especially when the energy between Scheppel and his two right-hand men, Jerry Grove on guitar and Bruce Wallace on drums, was organic and never died down.

Their choice of songs was interesting, ranging from old Hollywood to the modern age. His rendition of Christina Perry’s A Thousand Years, dedicated to his wife and daughter, was a particularly heartwarming moment.

The audience remained engaged with classics such as iconic tunes from Bond, The Lord of the Rings and Iron Man. While the concert was mostly focused on high-energy rock adaptations, it also included interludes of tender songs, such as the Perry hit and My Heart Will Go On.

Scheppel joked with the audience between songs, which strengthened the connection among him, the band, and the audience, all of whom were enjoying the history and beauty of film soundtracks.
