Silverton police have welcomed the lengthy sentence handed down to a man who committed an armed robbery in Nellmapius.
Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said in July 2016, a 30-year-old courier driver was waiting in his vehicle while his crew was making a delivery at an address in Nellmapius.
“An unknown man approached the vehicle and threatened him with a firearm.

“A second man, also armed, arrived in a silver VW Amarok, stopped next to him and instructed him to switch off the delivery vehicle.”
Weilbach said the suspects, who were four in number, unloaded boxes of cellphones into their vehicle.
“Before fleeing a shot was fired at the delivery truck escort vehicle. The driver of the escort vehicle sustained a head wound and was taken to hospital.”
Armed robbery and attempted murder cases were opened and investigated at Silverton SAPS.
Weilbach said one of the suspects was arrested soon after the robbery.
“He had used his father’s vehicle without permission that day to commit the robbery.”
Themba Lerof Nkwinka (27) was recently sentenced in the Gauteng regional court to a total of 24 years’ imprisonment.
Nkwinka received sentences of 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, six years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and another three years for possession of unlicensed ammunition.
Silverton SAPS station commander, Colonel Karel Swanepoel, commended all the members involved in the arrest and the investigation of the case docket.
“Silverton SAPS is working extremely hard to remove criminals from the streets and to ensure that justice is served,” said Swanepoel.
