The incident happened in Pretoria Gardens in front of a high school where the learners were also studying, said one of the students.

An alleged cellphone thief was caught in Pretoria west, thanks to the teamwork of police and a handful of students.

The incident happened in Pretoria Gardens in front of a high school where the learners were also studying, said one of the students, Christiaan Combrinck.

“We were out in front at the tea garden when a man drove past and hooted at us,” he said.

“He told us he had seen a man who just ran past steal someone’s cellphone.”

Without thinking, Combrinck and four others ran after the alleged thief and managed to catch him.

“We caught him and waited for the police to arrive on the scene,” he said.

He said after searching the man, a cellphone was found and a knife fell out of his pocket.

“The man could not explain where the cellphone came from,” he said.
