A 38-year-old Centurion police constable was sentenced to 15 years on Tuesday for murdering his wife.
Constable JM Mokobane was also sentenced a further three months imprisonment for negligent handling of a firearm by the Pretoria regional court.
“On 22 January 2017, Constable Mokobane had an argument with his wife, Bongiwe at their home in Olievenhoutbosch,” said Independent police investigative directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Moses Dlamini.

“During their argument, Mokobane said his wife took his service firearm and tried to kill herself.”
Mokobane claimed that he and his wife wrestled for the firearm, two shots went off and his wife was fatally wounded.
After investigations, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided that Mokobane must be charged with murder and failure to keep the firearm in a prescribed safe.
The policeman was found guilty on both counts on 10 April 2019 and was sentenced this week.
Dlamini said this sentence should send a message to all police officers to handle their firearms with care.
