More than 570 people were arrested in the Tshwane east policing district this past weekend.
“The Tshwane district commissioner followed through on his promise to tackle illegal drinking outlets, as well as criminals committing violent crimes,” said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.
“As a result 574 people were arrested during various operations held in the district.”
Miller said people were arrested for crimes such as, murder, rape, theft of motor vehicle, armed robbery, fraud, theft, possession of unlicensed firearm, sexual assault, possession of dangerous weapon, public indecency, pointing a firearm, possession of suspected stolen property and various drug-related crimes.

“A large number of people was arrested for various liquor-related crimes ranging from drinking in public, drunk driving, dealing in liquor without a valid liquor licence,” he said.
“In total, 14 illegal liquor premises have been closed and liquor was confiscated.”
He said alcohol-related crimes were the focus of various operations.
“The police have seen from previous experiences that a majority of family violence and violent crimes originate through the use of alcohol,” he said.

During the operations over 362 motor vehicles and 672 people were searched at road blocks, Miller said.
He said 54 cases of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol were registered.
Those arrested would appear before the various magistrates’ courts throughout Pretoria.
“We would like to appeal to motorists to have a designated driver or use the various e-Taxi services when they know that they are going to partake in alcohol and driving,” he said.
