The Pretoria North man shot six times during a house robbery in Hesteapark in last week, is recovering in hospital.
“Jan is strong and has fought for us. He is our hero,” Lorna Schoeman, the wife of Jan Schoeman, told Rekord.
Jan has been in the intensive care unit at the Netcare Montana hospital for a week but no longer under sedation and was taken off the ventilator yesterday.
“It breaks my heart to see him like that,” said Lorna.

Jan’s damaged spleen and a large piece of his intestine had to be removed.
Jan had been rushed to hospital in a critical condition on 5 June after two suspects attacked him in his home in Great Dane Street early in the morning.
Lorna said she was making school lunches for the kids when she heard a window break.
“The next moment there were two strange men in our house.”
They fired six bullets at Jan injuring his intestine, spleen, lung and arm.
The couple has two boys, 12 and 18, and the youngest has slept over at a friend’s house since the incident while the eldest looks after his mother at home.
“I can’t sleep and I don’t want to go into the kitchen either. I don’t want to be in my own home. I don’t know when the fear will get better,” Lorna said.
The robbers stole a TV set and a school bag.
“We are so thankful for everyone’s prayers. There is a long road to recovery for us.”
Tshwane police spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi said the police were investigating a case of attempted murder.
