VIDEO: Another north house up in flames

"They woke up when they heard things break and were smelling smoke."

Yet another Pretoria North family was left destitute when their home was allegedly set alight this week.

“We suspect arson,” local ward councillor Yolanda Duvenhage said.

She said the suspicion arose from CCTV footage she and the now homeless couple had seen.

This after Kobus and Wilma Smit woke up in their fiery house in Wolmer, north of Pretoria in the early hours of Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Duvenhage has commended and thanked the community for rallying behind the couple and assisting them to get back on their feet.

“The community has been wonderful.

“We’ve received so many clothes, shoes, blankets, furniture, food, a double bed and other household items,” she said.

Duvenhage added that they, however, still needed a fridge, gas stove and bottle.

The Smits spokesperson Anna Morgan said the couple also did not know how the fire started.

“They woke up when they heard things break and were smelling smoke,” she said.

Morgan said that the couple struggled to get out of the blazing house.

“Kobus sustained 60 percent burn wounds and Wilma sustained six percent,” she said.
