Farm attack stats released and on the rise

Farm attacks and murder stats have risen by 60% in the first six months of the year.

The Transvaal Land Unit South Africa (TLU) hosted a media briefing on 11 July where they announced the half-year stats of farm attacks, farm murders and other serious crimes.

The media briefing hosted by TLU saw presentations by Louis Meintjies, president of TLU SA, Major General Chris van Zyl, deputy general manager TLU SA, Johan Burger from the Institute for Security Studies and Prof. Llewellyn Curlewis, a law expert from the University of Pretoria.

According to the TLU, the register of incidents reported to the union 30 farm murders and 217 farm attacks in the nine provinces for January 2019 until June 2019.

For 2018 there were 54 farm murders and 394 farm attacks reported.

The farm murders this year include four in Gauteng, six in North West, four in Limpopo, one in Mpumalanga, five in KwaZulu-Natal, two in the Eastern Cape, zero in the Northern Cape, five in the Western Cape and three in the Free State.

Farm or smallholding attacks reported were 58 in Gauteng, 37 in the North West, 27 in Limpopo, 22 in Mpumalanga, 23 in KwaZulu-Natal, 12 in the Eastern Cape, three in the Northern Cape, 17 in the Western Cape and 18 in the Free State.

The report by the TLU documented the number of attacks in all nine provinces from 1990 to 2019.

In total 2 022 farm murders and 5 148 farm attacks have been documented.

“The statistics are shocking. But for the TLU SA these are not just statistics. It is 2 022 members of our farming community murdered since 1990.

“It is 5 148 times families and farmworkers fearing for their lives during a farm attack,” said Major General Chris van Zyl, deputy general manager of TLU SA.
