Little girl recovers in Pretoria hospital after falling into hot bath

Lizandri Oosthuizen sustained between second and third degree burns to about 45 percent of her body.

An 11-year-old girl is undergoing a very painful recovery in a Pretoria hospital after falling into a bathtub of scalding hot water.

Lizandri Oosthuizen was running a bath on Friday evening (5 July) on the Thabazimbi farm where she stays with her mother, Chantell Saunders.

“She had turned on the hot water tap and was sitting on the edge of the bathtub,” said Saunders.

Unbeknownst to Lizandri the geyser on the farm had been fixed and was producing extra hot water.

“She leaned over to close the tap.”

“When it wouldn’t budge she put her full weight on it, lost her balance and slid inside.”

Saunders recounted how Lizandri came running to her, telling her she had been burned.

“I moved closer to her and she begged me not to touch her,” she said.

“I could already see the blisters forming on her body.”

Lizandri was rushed to a nearby hospital where her mother was advised to transport her to Steve Biko hospital in Pretoria.

“We unfortunately don’t have medical aid as I am a single mother currently looking for a job,” said Saunders.

“Lizandri’s father suddenly passed away of a heart attack in his sleep in 2016 so we have been struggling.”

Lizandri sustained second and third degree burns to about 45 percent of her body.

Her lower back was especially badly damaged, making it very uncomfortable for her to lie down.

“Her doctors tell us she will have to undergo skin grafts on her lower back.”

“There are days when she is in a lot of pain at this stage. She can’t even lift her arms so she will have to undergo physical therapy once she recovers.”

Lizandri and her mother went for a walk recently which, although very painful, the family believes is a start to her recovery.

Saunders and her family are appealing to anyone who can assist them in any way during this time to please visit the Facebook page, “Lizandri Oosthuizen gebed en fondsinsameling”.
