Dog food drive to help with cold winter nights
"We welcome any furniture donations as well, as we will be able to sell that at one of our other events later in the year, which also helps financially,” says Van der Merwe.
Pretoria is in the midst of yet another cold front, and with intense winds and icy cold nights, orphaned animals across Pretoria need your help.
Pretoria Dog Rescue is a registered NPO and pro-life animal shelter with kennels in Thaba Tshwane, Voortrekkerhoogte.
On Sunday, a few women affiliated with the shelter hosted a dog food drive at the Waterkloof Dog Park, where people could donate food, blankets, toys, rice and anything else that the shelter can use to get their pups through the winter.
“Pretoria Dog Rescue has approximately 53 dogs in our care. We do have foster parents for the smaller dogs, as they are still too young to sleep in the kennels.
“We rely on our communities for donations and volunteers to help with whatever we are in need of,” said spokesperson Antoinette van der Merwe.

“We host around three of these types of events per month.
“We have been very lucky to have had good success rates for each of them, but we still urge people to not only donate necessities the dogs need.
“We welcome any pre-loved donations as well, as we will be able to sell that at one of our other charity events later in the year, which also helps financially,” says Van der Merwe.
Pretoria Dog Rescue has a list of immediate needs that include:
• Volunteers
• Monetary donations
• Monthly sponsorships for kennels
• Dog food (dry and tinned food as well as rice)
• Blankets
• Choke chains, harnesses and leashes
• Big water bowls
• Galvanised baths
