UPDATE: Initiative to honour beloved Moot resident
Kayla Burger (24) died in May after a vehicle accident on the corner of Steve Biko and Soutpansberg roads.
A Pretoria woman is raising funds for the Wollies animal shelter in memory of her cousin, a Moot resident who died in a car accident only a few kilometres from her home earlier this year.
Kayla Burger (24) died in May after she was in a vehicle accident on the corner of Steve Biko and Soutpansberg roads five kilometres from her home.
“Kayla and I were very close,” said Alicia du Preez.
“We even studied together.”
Du Preez said she decided to raise funds for animals because it was a cause that Burger was passionate about.

“She would be late for class if it meant that she could rescue a stray in need,” she said.
“I have never been to Wollies until Kayla took me there – she was so full of smiles and laughter when she was around animals.”
Which was why Du Preez decided to informally raise funds for Wollies on social media.
“I spoke to Wollies and they told me anything would be welcome, but they are most in need of dog and cat food,” she said.
“Anything is welcome – I am even willing to pick stuff up because I am very passionate about this project.”
She said the fundraiser started about two weeks ago and she planned a handover to the organisation on 3 August.
“I just realised that everything is about time – our time on earth is very measured,” she said.
“In her time on earth, Kayla has not only made a difference in the lives of people, but of animals as well.”
Du Preez told Rekord that she and Burger started competed in Apprentices South Africa, which will broadcast on Via in August.
“It was something that we did together – we did not compete against each other, but rather did it together.”
Du Preez said it was not a requirement for the show that she do something for charity.
“We even decided that if one won, we would share our winnings with each other.”
She said they had to go through several challenges as part of the competition.

She said Burger would be in the first two episodes.
“We started as a 100 entrants and now we are about 30 people who went through to the finals,” she said.
“After Kayla passed away, I did not want to continue with the competition and I even spoke to the managers about it,” she said.
“However, I quickly decided to continue with the hope that I could make a difference in someone else’s life.”
Du Preez said she planned on raising funds for Wollies regularly.
