Stepfather to serve life sentences for Ga-Rankuwa child abuse crimes

A forensic-led investigation resulted in the court handing down five life sentences and an additional 60 years imprisonment to the man.

A Ga-Rankuwa man has been handed five life imprisonment terms, together with an additional 60 years behind bars, following his conviction at the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court.

The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charges in a severe child sexual offences case.

The conviction stems from abuse incidents that occurred between 2018 and 2021, when the victim, who was 12 years old at the time, lived with her biological mother and stepfather.

The abuse came to light during a school holiday visit to her biological father, where she disclosed the alleged abuse to her stepmother.

Following the disclosure, a case was opened and assigned to Warrant Officer Freddy Alfred Maile of the Ga-Rankuwa Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

Tshwane SAPS spokesperson Johan Van Dyk confirmed that the investigation included the seizure and forensic examination of electronic devices, which later played a crucial role in securing a conviction.

On May 13, the accused was found guilty on charges of rape, sexual assault, crimen injuria, and possession of child pornography.

The court subsequently imposed five life sentences, as well as an additional 60 years’ imprisonment, marking one of the strongest sentencing outcomes in similar offences handled in the district.

Tshwane District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine commended Maile’s investigative work, saying the outcome reflected the dedication of SAPS officers in dealing with crimes against vulnerable groups.

“The successful prosecution of this matter demonstrates the commitment of SAPS members to ensuring that perpetrators of crimes against women and children are brought to justice. I commend Warrant Officer Maile for his diligence and unwavering commitment throughout the investigation,” said Thine.

He added that the combined efforts of the investigators and prosecutors ensured that justice was served in the matter.

“His efforts, together with those of the prosecution team and all role players involved, have ensured that justice was served for the victim,” said Thine.

He further stressed that the protection of women and children remains a priority for SAPS, particularly in cases involving sexual violence and abuse.

“The sentence imposed by the court sends a clear message that offences of this nature will be dealt with decisively and that those who commit such crimes will face the full consequences of the law,” said Thine.

He also encouraged members of the public to report abuse without delay, noting that early reporting plays a critical role in ensuring successful prosecutions and protecting victims from further harm.

“The protection of vulnerable members of society, particularly women and children, remains a priority for the South African Police Service,” expressed Thine.

Van Dyk said the case was investigated by the Ga-Rankuwa FCS Unit, which focuses specifically on family violence, child protection and sexual offences. The unit has been central in strengthening investigations of crimes against children and ensuring that evidence collected meets prosecutorial standards.

He mentioned that the forensic analysis of electronic devices formed a critical part of building the State’s case, strengthening the evidence presented before the court and contributing to the conviction.

Van Dyk concluded by saying that the sentence reflects the seriousness with which the justice system treats crimes of this nature and serves as a warning to offenders that sexual violence against children will be met with the full force of the law.
