Crime nightmare for east residents

The residents said they no longer felt safe because of crime and violence in the street.

Mamelodi East Sector 2 residents say crime in their area has become a nightmare.

They raised their concerns during a meeting with the Mamelodi East police and the local CPF on Saturday at Amanda Park Informal settlement.

The meeting was attended by residents of Merry Me and Mountain View.

The residents said they no longer felt safe because of crime and violence in the area.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mabel Sibanda said residents complained that house break-ins, thefts, teenage pregnancy, the robbery of people going to work in the early hours and bodies being dumped in the area were getting out of hand.

CPF deputy chairperson Jane Ramoroka encouraged residents to form localised CPFs and youth desks.

Ramoroka said they are going to recruit unemployed local youth to the CPF and youth desk.

Sibanda told the residents that their concerns had been taken note of and she also encouraged them to work with the police to fight and prevent crime.

The residents said the area desperately needed a mobile clinic provide basic healthcare to pregnant teenagers.

They said they were concerned this lack of healthcare would result in the increase in the concealment of birth crime.

Ramoroka advised residents to walk in groups in the mornings and evening to prevent falling falling victim to robbers.

She promise a follow-up meeting soon and advised the residents to report crime or any suspicious person to the police on 08600-10-111.
