Bikes high up on criminals’ wanted list in the east

The Brooklyn area is still experiencing an increase in bike thefts, the police said this week.

The Brooklyn police are still experiencing an increase of theft of bicycles during burglaries.

This is according to police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach who said recently there is also a tendency to steal motorbikes during burglaries.

“On Thursday morning at about 03:00 CSI Security chased two suspects in Waterkloof with four suspected stolen bicycles. The suspects managed to escape without the bicycles.

“The security officers recovered the bicycles and handed them to Brooklyn SAPS for safekeeping.”

Weilbach said an hour later the same security officers discovered an address in Marais Street where the garage doors were standing open and the electrical fencing was cut.

“The owner of the house confirmed that his bicycles were stolen. He was relieved to hear that it was recovered.”

Other reports of stolen bicycles were received over the weekend in Waterkloof and Erasmusrand.

Weilbach said in Erasmusrand three motorbikes were also stolen from garages during burglaries.

“Criminals often find easier access to garages and outside buildings in comparison to the main house.

“This is every so often as a result of the lack of proper security measures at these buildings. These burglaries typically occurred during the early morning hours.”
