UPDATE: Pretoria traffic remains heavily congested due to ongoing strike
“We cannot be held accountable for mistakes done by senior managers. We are asking them to give us a fair increase of 18 percent because that’s what is due to us. “
Traffic was still chaotic in the Pretoria CBD due to an ongoing strike by workers affiliated to the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu).
On Monday morning, bus drivers belonging to Samwu abandoned their buses at major intersections in the Pretoria CBD, causing traffic congestions all over the city.
The strike started last week Thursday, but after wage negotiations between the union and council reached a deadlock, the strike intensified on Monday morning.
Samwu general secretary Koena Ramotlou said another meeting was scheduled for 12:30 on Monday.
“We cannot be held accountable for mistakes done by senior managers. We are asking them to give us a fair increase of 18 percent because that’s what is due to us. “
A Re Yeng and Tshwane Bus Services operations were suspended until further notice.

Samwu vowed to shut down the city until workers’ demands were met.
Tshwane MMC for roads and transport Sheila Senkubuge said the workers should express their dissatisfaction in a “responsible manner”.
“This is just opportunistic behaviour. The illegal movements of city property, vandalism, and actions that disrupt service delivery will not be tolerated.”
The city apologised to commuters for the inconvenience caused.
Major streets in the CBD affected included Madiba, E’skia Mphahlele, WF Nkomo, Thabo Sehume and Nelson Mandela Drive.
Stores in these streets were closed for the day and Tshwane metro police were deployed to affected streets.
