Heavy sentence handed to East security guard for N1 robbery

The arrest of the 27-year-old former security guard followed an increase in police patrols on the N1 freeway.

Brooklyn police welcomed the eight-year sentence the Pretoria regional court handed a security guard for trying to rob a 46-year-old man by the side of the N1 freeway at knife-point in 2016.

Johannes Moila (27), a security guard from Mamelodi, was sentenced on 23 July 2019 for the crime, according to police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.

According to the Weilbach, the victim was dropped off by a taxi on the freeway, where he waited for his brother to pick him up.

“Two unknown men armed with knives approached him. They threatened him and robbed him of his bag and jacket.”

“The suspects fled on foot and the man chased after the robber who was in possession of his bag.”

Police officers on patrol saw this and responded.

“The suspect flagged down a taxi, but police officers stopped him before he could get into the taxi.”

She said the suspect was positively identified as the man who robbed the victim and he was immediately arrested.

Weilbach said Brooklyn SAPS increased police visibility and patrols on the freeway in June 2016 after an increase in robberies.

Brooklyn SAPS station commander Brigadier Kushie Pietersen commended the officers for the arrest and Detective Constable SS Tshabalala, who secured the conviction.
