Young DJ appreciates elderly women in his community

A Mabopane DJ with a passion for music and events, is on a mission to give back to elderly women who play an important role in raising families.

A young Mabopane DJ held his first charity event on Sunday to give thanks to elderly women for their contribution in raising and looking after children.

Andrew Majabe (25) AKA DJ Shizo, is popularly known for his ability to draw crowds from Soshanguve, Mabopane, Ga-Rankuwa and Pretoria with his monthly events, where guests are guaranteed a good variety of music, good food and company.

The charity event, called Koko Go Monate Gabo Shizo, where he raised funds that will be donated to hospice and centres for the elderly in Mabopane, took place in Block B.

Residents and guests were encouraged to donate blankets, non-perishable goods, medical and sanitary supplies. An entrance fee of R30 will also go towards the chosen centres.

“I was raised by my grandmother. She taught me a lot of things in life. Our grannies know about life more than us and we need to appreciate them,” said Majabe.

He said he is what he is today because of the role his grandmother played in his life.

“Grandmothers teach us life and how things need to be done. They teach us things like to wash dishes and everything. Doing this event is a way of appreciating them by giving back to the community,” said Majabe.

All the proceeds donated in the event will be given to centres that he will still identify, he added.

“We have not yet appointed organisations where we will be donating. We are still looking. So far we have spotted a few of them and we are still looking for more where we can donate for our grannies who lives there,” added Majabe.

“Anything that a person can offer we accept. I currently do not have any partners in this initiative that I have started,” he said.

On 4 August, Majabe will continue with his monthly events where he hopes to raise more donations.

He said on the day, elderly women from identified centres will receive presents and hampers.

Majabe’s friend and co-event organiser, Kagiso Mogatle, said the event was also meant to uplift people in the community, especially children as they now look up to him.
