Police in Pretoria North shut down a shebeen over the weekend, which saw more than 480 people arrested for various crimes.
The shebeen was shut down during compliance inspections in the area.
A number of liquor premises were also issued non-compliance fines while three were arrested in Akasia for dealing in liquor without a license, according to police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.
Police held eight roadblocks across the Tshwane metro with the help of metro police and the Gauteng traffic department.
“More than forty motorists were arrested for drunk driving,” said Weilbach.
“Community members were also arrested for drinking in public.”
“Members also focused on illegal firearms, drugs and recovering suspected stolen goods and vehicles.”
Numerous fines were issued for road traffic offences.
A total of 489 persons will appear in different magistrate’s and community courts in the coming week on various charges.
Tshwane district commissioner Major General Daniel Mthombeni applauded the efforts of the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies over the weekend.
“Criminals are feeling the heat now through these consistent police operations and intensified police visibility,” said Mthombeni.
“Criminals should think twice before committing any criminal activities on the streets of Pretoria.”
Communities are urged to play their role by reporting any suspicious persons, vehicles or circumstances to the police immediately by phoning the 10111 emergency-number.
