Over 450 nabbed during weekend ops

More than 450 people were arrested in various parts of Tshwane during the intensive crime prevention operations between 7 and 8 August.

More than 450 people were nabbed at the weekend during a multi-disciplinary anti-crime operation in Tshwane. Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said the operation was multi-faceted including roadblocks, stop and searches, patrols and tracing of a wanted suspect.

“Tshwane [police] district commissioner Major-General DT Mthombeni took a lead during various operations.

“More than 450 suspects’ arrests emanate from intensive crime prevention operations that started in the early hours of Thursday, 7 to 8 August 2019, in various parts of Tshwane district.”

She said during the O Kae Molao operation, the Tshwane detective tracing team arrested 137 suspects for murder, contempt of court, robbery, house robbery, kidnapping and violation of a protection order.

“Roadblocks were set up and led by senior policewomen officers, during this month of women’s celebration, included [on] main roads such as WF Nkomo, R55, R21 and R80.

“During the roadblocks, two vehicles were discovered, one reported to be stolen in Rietgat and the other was used during the commission of a crime in Ga-Rankuwa.

“Throughout the weekend more than 1 050 vehicles were searched, 124 vehicles were tested, more than 1 250 persons were searched, aarto fines were issued, three illegal shebeens were closed in the process and alcohol and second-hand goods were confiscated.”

Selepe said based on a tip-off, the police busted two people red-handed with 15kg of cannabis in Bosman Street.

“They were taken to their house, whereupon arrival a search was conducted at the outside room and 2×15kg of dagga was found inside a bucket.

“The suspects confirmed that they were supplying dagga from Swaziland. Both suspects aged 21 and 31 years were arrested for possession of dagga.”

She said some of the arrested had already appeared in different magistrates’ courts across Tshwane.

Mthombeni said the arrests were crucial to keeping the community and visitors to Tshwane safe.
