Villieria police reach out to women

In South Africa a woman is raped every 36 seconds and a child goes missing every six hours.

The Villieria police station is tackling several projects this month in support of women’s month, which is commemorated in August. Not only is the police station planning to launch an awareness campaign against crime with other key players, they also ran several outreaches in their area.

Police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits said on the first day of this month they started collecting toiletries for girls.

“These toiletries will be donated to girls who really need it,” she said. “People do not realize how much girls struggle out there to afford basic toiletries and we want to donate as many of these parcels to as many girls as possible up until Christmas.”

She said the Annabel organisation can also be contacted if anyone wants to get involved with similar projects.

Brits said Mon Ami trauma counsellors and the police spoiled the parents at the Louis Botha orphanage last Thursday.

“The Shed prepared a delicious breakfast for everyone and the guest speaker Jacques Botes made it a wonderful motivating morning,” she said.

She said the CMR of East Lynne hosted a tea for 80 women from the area.

“It was a top-class event and the women were spoiled with small presents, music and a motivation speech which gave them a little hope again for the future,” she said.

Brits said the awareness campaign will be launched later this week and the focus will be on crimes against women and children.

Although they launched several initiatives in August, Brits added that the police station is aiming to reach out every month to women and children in need.

“In South Africa a woman is raped every 36 seconds and a child goes missing every six hours. More than 100 cases of child abuse are reported weekly,” she said.

“It is important that the necessary awareness is spread to protect our women and children.”

Brits is urging residents to report any crime immediately to their nearest police station.

“Child abuse, sexual and household violence is one of the most destructive experiences that women and children experience,” she said.
