East teen in custody ‘for attacking parents with burning wood’

“It is alleged that a 19-year-man punched his father and mother before assaulting them with a burning wooden stick."

A 19-year-old Welbekend, Pretoria East man has been arrested for domestic violence after allegedly assaulting his parents.

The man allegedly punched his father and mother before attacking them with a burning piece of wood, according to police spokesperson Sergeant Tsietsi Lamola.

He said that members of the Welbekend sector policing swiftly responded when the complaint was made last week, and the suspect was arrested immediately.

“The suspect appeared in court on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. It is domestic violence-related. The case was postponed to next Monday, and the suspect was remanded in custody for further investigations,” Lamola said.

In a separate incident, a 52-year-old man accused of a burglary in the east was set to appear at the Welbekend periodical court on Wednesday.

The suspect was arrested after a storeroom at the house of a veterinary surgeon was broken into and furniture and some veterinary equipment were stolen two weeks ago.

Lamola said the suspect made a brief court appearance last week, but the case was postponed.

“He faces charges of burglary at a residential premises and theft. He will remain behind bars until his bail hearing this week,” Lamola said.

He said that the suspect was traced and arrested through a detective-driven operation.

“Stolen goods were recovered from the suspect’s house in the east.”
