Warning to be alert as criminals target east guests houses
Police have warned guest house owners against criminals gaining access to residences under the guise of looking for overnight accommodation.

The Brooklyn police have cautioned guest house and B&B owners to beware criminals pretending to be guests looking for overnight accommodation.
Spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said two robberies were this week reported to the police
On Tuesday, 20 August around 20:00, five people arrived at a guest house in Rigel Avenue in Waterkloof Ridge.
“Two asked if they can have a look at the rooms before they book. After viewing the rooms they indicated that they wanted to stay.”
Weilbach said at the reception area, the suspects threatened the receptionist with firearms and demanded money.

“When they could not get money, they took a laptop and fled,” she said.
“On the same evening around 22:00, a couple arrived at a guesthouse in Rupert Street in Brooklyn.
“They too wanted to view a room before making a booking. Back at the reception area, they indicated that they will take the room.
“They asked if they can have a few drinks in the reception area before making the payment for the room. The 24-year-old male receptionist agreed,” Weilbach said.
“The couple offered the receptionist a drink which he accepted. He does not remember what happened after that. He woke up the next day around 15:00, only in his underwear.”

He was locked up inside his room.
Weilbach said cellphones and other items were stolen from his room.
“He suspects that the couple spiked his drink and stole his belongings.”
She said it was advisable for guest house and B&B owners to have an access policy.
“All visitors and guests must sign in and provide proof of identity. If any illegal activities are suspected, the personnel must not hesitate to phone the police. Security measures such as CCTV cameras at parking bays and inside the buildings can assist the police with investigations,” said Weilbach.
