Rubber bullets were fired on Thursday afternoon, in Sunnyside following a tense stand-off between “an angry mob” and the police.
It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries or if anyone was arrested.
According to a source, the situation was a virtual repeat of the uproar that occurred in the Pretoria CBD on Wednesday, when taxi drivers allegedly went on the rampage, resulting in looting and burning down of businesses apparently belonging to foreign traders.

Lucky Ramadibane, part of the angry group, said the protesters wanted police to remove alleged drug dealers from the area.
The mob wanted drug peddlers to be removed from the Sunnyside centre specifically, a flat in the area.
Ramadibane said police wanted the group to disperse, however “they should do their job and remove the problematic dealers here in this flat”.
“Police must be more firm on lawlessness and show the community that they are here to do right thing.”
This comes as 24 suspects were expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Thursday, after they were arrested for Wednesday’s CBD violence.
Police spokesperson Danial Mavimbela said he could not comment on the matter “at this stage”.

The violence was a sequel to the fatal shooting of 45-year-old taxi driver Jabu Baloyi who had an altercation with alleged drug dealers on Tuesday.
On Thursday, streets affected were Cilliers and Robert Sobukwe in the Sunnyside heartland.
