UPDATE: Do not rush to demolish your home, east residents told
Two local families recently complained to Rekord about having demolished their homes after reportedly being promised new “formal” houses.

The Housing Development Agency (HDA) said it has not received any complaints about houses or structures being demolished in Nellmapius to make space for formal housing.
“No house or shack would ever be moved or broken down if there were no approved plans in place yet,” said housing development agency spokesperson Katlego Moselakgomo.
This after two local families recently complained to Rekord about having demolished their homes after reportedly being promised new “formal” houses.
Moselakgomo said an HDA investigation revealed that the families were not yet approved as housing beneficiaries.
The two families claimed that an official working for the contractor told them to move their shacks to make way for their new RDP houses.

They said the official told them that their new houses had already been approved.
However, they never received any new houses.
Now one of the women said she was on the verge of losing custody of her two children to her ex-husband, because she could not provide proper shelter for them.
Another victim, Angelinah Busisiwe Ramoroka of extension 24, said an official also came to her stand and allegedly told her the same news.
According to her, he even asked for an ID copy.
Ramoroka said in her case, the woman came to her stand last year September, and told her that her RDP house has been approved and she needed to make way for the new house to be built on the site.
Moselakgomo said in terms of human settlements processes, no house or shack could be moved or broken down if there was no approval.
He said applicants should visit the HDA site office or municipal office or the provincial human settlements department with their IDs to check their status on the housing subsidy system.
