Kameeldrift killers found guilty

Dolphy Sambok (45) and Karabo Semake (25) were found guilty of shooting Riekie Steenberg (50) at a smallholding in Leeufontein, Kameeldrift East on 29 June 2016.

Two men were found guilty of the 2016 murder of a Kameeldrift woman in the Pretoria High Court today.

Dolphy Sambok (45) and Karabo Semake (25) were found guilty of shooting Riekie Steenberg (50) at a smallholding in Leeufontein, Kameeldrift East on 29 June 2016.

Sambok and Semake were also accused of housebreaking with the intent to commit robbery with aggravating circumstances; murder; attempted murder; possession of a prohibited firearm; possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Judge Hennie de Vos found Sambok guilty of six out of the seven counts, while Semake was found guilty of five of the seven counts.

De Vos said both the accused did not leave a good impression on the court and rejected both of their statements.

Sambok, Semake and a third suspect, who has since died, broke into Riekie and her husband Jurie Steenberg’s house in Kameeldrift.

After a scuffle broke out between Jurie and the suspects, Riekie was fatally shot in the chest.

Jurie was wounded in the attack, but survived.

A 38 special revolver, ammunition, two Nokia cellphones, a wedding ring, wristwatch, necklace, bracelet and R8 500 in cash were stolen from the Steenberg couple.

Investigating officer Warrant Officer Werner van den Bergh and state advocates Annelie Coetzee and Salome Scheepers welcomed the judge’s verdict.
