Rietgat school, police raise crime awareness

Rietgat police, in conjunction with the MJ Mgidi Secondary School, launched a crime awareness campaign at the school’s premises in Soshanguve Block X recently.

Rietgat police, in conjunction with the MJ Mgidi Secondary School, launched a crime awareness campaign at the school’s premises in Soshanguve Block X recently.

Captain Steven Maluleka said the objective of the campaign was to together fight the scourge of crime within and outside the school.

The campaign also roped in other stakeholders such as the Department of Education, Department of Justice, South African National Council on Alcoholism (Sanca) and Family and Marriage Society of South Africa (Famsa).

Principal Mongae Modise said under his leadership crime “will never find a breathing space” in Soshanguve.

“We are not going to tolerate the scourge of crime, hence this initiative. We are planting a seed that will become a tree, which will overcome crime.”

Njabulo Zulu, a 13-year-old anti-bullying activist from Padisago Primary School in Block BB spoke to the fellow learners about the negative impact of bullying.

He also encouraged learners to stop bullying teachers.

“Stop bullying people who are here to help you,” said Zulu.

“Have a vision and set goals and you will achieve it.”

Ike Dibakoane spoke on behalf of educators about attacks on teachers, learners and parents. He told both learners and parents how easy it is to become a victim of crime.

“Make sure you avoid things that will attract crime,” said Dibakoane.

“A child who does not know what to do at school ends up being a victim of crime.”

Ex-convict Lebogang Veli Baloyi who was convicted for 25 years for murder, hijacking and attempted murder gave an awe-inspiring speech about how crime affected his life.

Sergeant Ntombizodwa Maphanga of the Rietgat police implored parents to dress their children properly and stop interfering when teachers are instilling discipline.

The event was attended by about 1 900 people, including learners.

Lucas Mashike from Block X expressed his gratitude to the event organisers.

“You did a great job by organising this and I am sure our children have learnt a lot from it,” said Mashike.
