Man arrested in the Moot after attempted hijacking

A chase ensued when the metro police caught up to the suspect in Lavender Road, north Pretoria.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on Thursday on a charge of attempted hijacking following a chase from the north of Pretoria to the Moot.

The man was arrested on the corner of Steve Biko Road and Frederika Street in the evening for allegedly hijacking a Toyota Corolla in the north of Pretoria, said police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt.

“The metro police received information through a tracker, which led them to Lavender Road,” he said.

The man was arrested by the metro police and is being detained at Pretoria Moot police station.

“When the metro police caught up with the suspect, he sped off and a chase ensued.”

Breedt said the Toyota came to an abrupt stop when the left front wheel was shot out.

“The suspect started shooting at the officers and they returned fire,” he said.

He said no one was injured.

“The man was arrested by the metro police and is being detained at the Pretoria Moot police station,” he said.

Breedt said the man faces charges of attempted murder, hijacking and pointing a firearm would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

AfriForum East Moot neighbourhood watch chairperson Andries Opperman said two watch members went to the scene after they heard 10 gunshots.
