UPDATE: Still no arrest in Centurion taxi owner murder case

There has yet to be an arrest in the murder of a taxi owner gunned down at a Centurion traffic light in July, the police confirmed this week.

There has yet to be an arrest in the murder of a taxi owner gunned down at a Centurion traffic light in July, the police confirmed this week.

This as Gauteng premier David Makhura announced an inquiry into the cause of the taxi violence, fatalities and instability following a spate of taxi-related crimes in the province recently.

The taxi owner had stopped behind a red traffic light on the corner of Cradock Avenue and Cantonments Road when four men opened fire at his vehicle.

“The police are still investigating the murder,” police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele told Rekord.

The taxi boss was one of four who lost their lives over the past few months in Centurion.

Makhura gave the inquiry six months to complete its work.

“The Gauteng government is concerned that the taxi industry is submerged in violence which, despite efforts by law enforcement agencies and government, continues to worsen,” said provincial spokesperson Thabo Masebe.

Masebe said the taxi industry transported more than 75% of commuters which made it the dominant mode of transport in the province.

“Anyone, whether it be a community organisation, taxi association, driver or marshal, who is in possession of more information and wishes to give evidence before the commission is invited to contact the secretary,” he said.

The inquiry is to probe:

– The underlying reasons for the recurring conflict, violence, fatalities and instability within the industry;

– The activities of operators, legal and illegal, as well as any other group or person that contributes to the recurring conflict;

– The provision of minibus taxi transport services authorised by permits and licences; and

– How the minibus taxi business model, including the formation and management of associations, contributes to the recurring conflict.
