Clean-up operation around Moot mountain

The Moot police sector launched a clean-up and crime campaign last week around the mountainous area.

The Moot police sector launched a clean-up and crime campaign last week around the mountainous area.

This action was launched by Wonderboompoort’s sectors 1 and 2 in collaboration with the police and the community.

“We decided to clean the Magaliesberg and also look at what is going on there in terms of crime,” Rinus de Bruyn of the CPF said.

“Some of our patrollers have already started noticing that fires are regularly burning on the mountain in the evenings, so we decided to arrange an operation with the police to investigate.”

This action kicked off on Saturday morning.

He said they climbed the mountain from the east, behind the Joos Bekker caravan park, and moved west.

Other members drove from Merwede Street in Mountain View to the towers at the top of the mountain, moving east.

“A member of the sector police climbed to the far right tower and found that cables had been cut and solar panels damaged,” he said.

De Bruyn said they found many places where fires were made and trees cut down for wood.

He said there were other places where forest dwellers left blankets and plastic demarcation.

“As far as our investigation has allowed us, there seems to be no squatters or permanent residents living on the mountain on the southern side,” he said.

“Members found two knives in the investigation. There were a number of places where many beautiful stones were packed. There was even a large stone in the shape of a cross.”

He said they found a spot deeper in the mountain where cables were burned, but no one was there.

De Bruyn said the action took about three hours.

He thanked all those involved in the action.

“These people have sacrificed their time to take up the operation with us,” he said.

“It won’t be our last, it’s just the beginning.”
