The municipality will investigate the cause of an explosion at an electrical box in which two of their workers were injured on Thursday afternoon.

WS Sisikwe and TE Mampa were hospitalised after the box they had been working on blew up near the Constantia Park school.

MMC for utility services Abel Tau said investigations were underway to determine what caused the explosion.

“We will also offer support to the families as this was an injury on duty,” he said.

He said this would include paying for medical bills and counselling.

Tau said the city would also have to tighten safety at the workplace to ensure that all staff members were safe.

“It cannot be correct that when staff come to work they end up injured,” he said.

“We will follow all the processes for an investigation so as to prevent this from happening again.”

Sisikwe had to be airlifted as he sustained serious injuries, including severe burns to his upper body.

Mampa sustained a burn wound to the hand and was discharged from the hospital a day later.

Tau said the metro had planned to visit Sisikwe.
