Wheels come off west cop vehicles

The Atteridgeville police are adamant that their lack of patrol vans would not lead to the rise in crime in the area.

The Atteridgeville police are adamant that their lack of patrol vans would not lead to the rise in crime in the area.

A shortage of police vans has been reported in the area in the past few months.

Spokesperson Mapula Rikhotso said the Atteridgeville police found it difficult to render effective service without the 22 vehicles currently at the SAPS service garage.

“We are currently using the limited resources available at the station to ensure that crime is curbed and that criminals do not go unpunished. Certain strategies have been put in place to ensure that the safety of the community is not compromised,” she said.

The station used small vans and sedans hence their fleet had a shorter life span, Rikhotso said.

“The vehicles are easily damaged because the terrain is mountainous with gravel roads, especially in the informal settlements,” she said.

Rikhotso said she did not know when the vehicles would be ready for service.
