Young north anti-bullying activist makes a difference among peers

Bully campaign helps change victims and let them talk openly about being bullied.

Njabulo Zulu is a 13-year-old anti-bullying activist who believes in helping her peers overcome the pressure of being bullied in their space of learning.

The grade 7 learner at Padisago Primary School in Soshanguve started her anti-bullying campaign in 2017, after she fell victim to being bullied at a tender age.

“I was bullied at school about how I looked, bullied because of my dark skin complexion and they said I was not beautiful,” said Njabulo.

“I was scared to talk about it but my mum noticed that something was not okay with me that is when I finally got the courage to speak up and get help,” she said.

Njabulo said bullying should be attended to as a matter of urgency because it could have serious consequences for those affected.

Bullied pupils can be affected even academically, as this abuse could cause a drastic change in their performance.

As a young aspiring motivational speaker, Njabulo’s campaigns talks are aimed at tackling different types of bullying that an individual can go through on a daily basis. The campaign encourages bullied victims to confront and seek help for being bullied.

“I want to bring change to somebody who has been bullied and have a positive impact on that individual’s life,” said Njabulo.

Her first public speaking experience was at school, where she addressed her peers about bullying and how it made others feel bad about themselves.

Padisago Primary School learners were encouraged to speak out against bullying through games and questions posed to them. `

School principal Sinah Lekalakala said that teachers should have an effective relationship with their pupils.

“We as teachers, find it difficult to help students who do not want to open up about the difficulties or issues they may be facing.”

Lekalakala said that if a pupil was unable to open up to their teacher, the school would then seek help from a qualified social worker who would assess the learner and offer counselling sessions.

Kelebogile Sello a pupil said that the talk was motivational and offered great help for her to take a stand against bullying.

“As a learner the talks have given me courage, to open up and talk about my experience as a bullied victim,” said Sello.
