North minors facing serious criminal charges

The three allegedly shot at the police who retaliated.

The alleged murderers of taxi driver Thabo Magagula (41) appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Three minors aged 15, 16 and 17 are alleged to have taken part in the murder.

According to the police Magagula was shot in the upper body before he was pushed out of his Toyota Avanza and left for dead on Friday in Zone 1 Ga-Rankuwa.

His alleged attackers were arrested when the police spotted the car in Winterveld, north of Pretoria, on Saturday.

Captain Mathews Nkoadi said a shootout between the minors and the police occurred before the arrest.

“The suspects then drove into a pole and they were apprehended by the K9 unit.”

Nkoadi said the three minors had allegedly pretended to be passengers in Magagula’s taxi before he was shot.

He warned taxi drivers to be extra careful when driving at night.

“We urge taxi drivers to always be cautious when driving during the night. They should not stop at deserted areas and should take note of all suspicious looking passengers,” said Nkoadi.

“They should always be on the alert for any eventualities to report any unfamiliar behaviour immediately, especially when driving Toyota Avanza since it seems to be on the market lately.”

The three accused are expected back in court soon for a possible bail hearing.
