East school still mourning ‘ray of sunshine’ girl’s death
The grade 3 learner, was walking home with her mother Maria when a car hit her at the intersection of Delmas Road and Barnard Street.
The community of Elardus Park Primary School are still mourning the death one of their learners, Sharlon Aphane who died on Tuesday afternoon.
The grade 3 learner, was walking home with her mother Maria when a car hit her at the intersection of Delmas Road and Barnard Street.
According to the school, the driver of the car, waited with Maria until emergency services and police arrived on the scene.
“Maria was not injured in the accident,” the school said in a statement.
“Emergency services were on the scene immediately, and provided the necessary assistance.”
Learners and staff have been receiving counselling and “the necessary support”, the school said.
An aid fund to support the Aphane family was also established.
The school’s principal Toy Human described the girl as a spontaneous, friendly and gifted person.
“She was a beloved member of the school’s junior choir and excelled in singing and culture,” he said.
Sharlon was rushed to the Steve Biko academic hospital by ambulance where she later succumbed to her injuries, which included head, chest, pelvis and upper legs injuries.

Learners continued to lay flowers and consolation symbols at the school’s square in honour of the girl who some described as a “ray of sunshine”.

Messages of support and requests to support the family financially have also been flowing, leading the school to establish an aid fund.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced yet.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
