Fun as first day of schooling kicks off
Grade 1 learners at the Maragon Olympus and Tyger Valley primary schools started their first day of school on Wednesday.
Schools were abuzz on Wednesday morning as parents dropped off their Grade 1 children for their first day of school.
The Maragon Primary School was no different, with some learners receiving warm good-bye hugs and words of advice from their parents, while some quickly jumped out of cars to find their way to class.
The school admitted four classes of Grade 1 learners who were received in a warm reception ceremony by the rest of the school.
Kera Phoshoko (6) said she was excited to make new friends to play with.

“I am going to make friends and learn from my teacher. I am a big girl now,” she said.
Learners at the Tyger Valley Primary School were just as excited.
“I want to be a vet because I love animals and I want to help them when they are sick,” said Willow Watson, who sat in class while the teacher gave instructions on how to sort their stationary.
“My favourite animals are puppies.”

Feres Okasha (6) said he was looking forward to the 12 years ahead of him so he could be a scientist after school.
“I love experiments and seeing things change like magic,” he said.
“I am very excited to meet new friends.”
Head of Grade 1 at the Tyger Valley Primary School, Jade Badenhorst, said parents were given advice on how to avoid tears on the first day of school.

“We advised our parents that a quick goodbye helps them not to cry,” she said.
The biggest challenge when dealing with first graders was figuring out where they were academically, emotionally and socially to ensure their needs are met.
“Once this was mastered learners will be fully integrated into the classrooms. I hope they have a great year, we definitely make it a fun year for them,” she said.

“For parents, be there for your child and listen to them. Be involved enough to understand their needs and be in contact with their teacher.”
Healthy lunch boxes were also the order of the day and both schools said they encourage parents to pack a balanced meal for their children.
