The Pretoria High School for Girls grade 8 group took part in the Margaret Roberts Seed Bank Ceremony.
Guest speaker Sandy Roberts elaborated on the importance of agriculture and botanicals that are rapidly dying in the environment.
She spoke about how plants have amazing attributes that can help us in our everyday lives – being used for medicine, food and cosmetics.
She explained why we benefit from seed banks.
A seed bank is a container or capsule in which seeds can be stored, even in extreme conditions such as fires or floods.
Each grade 8 learner received a pack of seeds that were stored in a seed bank, with a letter they wrote for themselves.
These seed banks will be opened on the last day of the grade 8’s Matric year in 2024. The seeds can then be planted in their gardens for the future.
