Burglaries in Gauteng schools increase to 55

Three schools in Pretoria were among 15 schools that were broken into between 9 and 11 April.

Three Pretoria schools are part of the latest statistics on schools in Gauteng that have been broken into and valuables stolen in the past two days.

In a statement, MEC for Gauteng education Panyaza Lesufi said he was worried about the increasing number of burglaries at Gauteng schools during the lockdown period.

“It must be noted that a number of burglaries and vandalism of schools has increased rapidly since our last report on 9 April 2020.”

A total of 15 schools were broken into including Eesterust secondary school and Matseke primary school in Atteridgeville and Mahube Valley primary in Mamelodi, bringing the total to 55 since the beginning of the lockdown.

Other schools included the Harmony primary in Lenasia, Jordan secondary in Evaton, Thomas Nhlapho primary in Meyerton,  Moqhaka secondary in Sebokeng to name a few.

“It seems that these criminals are not bothered and they don’t have a sense of the damage they are causing to the future of our children and our country because without education, we are doomed, the future is bleak. Indeed the coarse behavior of these criminals is annoying and they must be apprehended and face the law,” said Lesufi.

“This is to reiterate our plea for protection of our schools, and the community is encouraged to always report criminal activities in their areas to the law enforcement agencies for a swift response.”

Last week it was reported that four schools in Soshanguve were set alight.
