Three north ‘angels’ feed community
An initiative by local north counselors turns into a community project to assist more than 35 families in the Kameeldrift area in the north of Pretoria.
Three women from Kameeldrift in the north of Pretoria have joined hands to reach out to the community during the national lockdown due to the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.
Trauma counsellors Carli Venter, Milydia Potgieter and Ronel de Beer from the Kameeldrift crisis centre saw an initiative to support vulnerable families in the area with food parcels turn into a community project.
“It is just grace upon grace,” Venter said.
Since the first delivery of more than 35 parcels to families over at the weekend, the three women along with the community have been hard at work to prepare for the second round of parcels to be distributed later this week.
Venter said the parcels had enough food and essential items to last a family of four for about a week.
A basic parcel consists of maize, rice, pasta, salt, sugar, coffee and tea, two packs of soya mince, two-minute noodles, soup powders, canned vegetables, bully beef/canned fish, spread, margarine, oil, milk, bread, eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, onions and meat.
Other essential items in the parcels included toilet paper, soap, liquid soap, toothpaste and shampoo.
“Each parcel is about R500 worth of groceries.”
Venter said the parcels were made up with donated goods from the individuals and local businesses in the community.
They also recently, received a cash donation of R10 000 from the Good Morning Angels organisation when they were featured on the Martin Bester Breakfast Club on Jacaranda FM.
Venter said the project was directly aimed at helping the needy families in the Kameeldrift and greater area.
The initiative has grown into a community project and has two extra women who help in the Roodeplaat area.
Because the parcels are only enough for a week, the same families will receive a second parcel on Friday, along with new families identified to be needy.
Venter thanked the community for making the project possible.
